INDONESIA AKAN OVERSUPPLY JAGUNG DALAM TIGA BULAN KE DEPAN

[:id]Jakarta (18/1/2017), bertempat dikantor Kementerian Pertanian (Kementan), Menteri Pertanian (Mentan) Andi Amran Sulaiman dan Gabungan Perusahaan Makanan Ternak (GPMT) menggelar rapat terkait supply jagung.

Taking place at the Ministry of Agriculture’s office, the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Andi Amran Sulaiman and the Joint Association of Lot feed Producers (GPMT) held a meeting about the supply of corn.

GPMT is group of Companies who are invited by the Ministry of Agriculture to cooperate in absorbing local corn harvests. This was proved to be successful with the decrease in percentage of Indonesian import which became 66%.

The Minister said that Indonesia will have an oversupply of corn in the next 3 month as there were significant production increases in many areas. This was caused by good cooperation between the government and private sectors. “We cooperate so that our production numbers increase, this is a good synergy and our corn imports decrease 66%. Now they are concerned for the coming oversupply.” Said the Minister.

The oversupply itself is predicted to happen in the harvesting season of March-April this year and it will be in the amount of 12 million tons, an increase from last year’s 10 million tons.

“Our corn consumption and feed lot is only 1,7 million ton monthly or 20.4 million tons annually.” He explained. With this oversupply, the Ministry and GPMT will also extend cooperation with BULOG to store excess on corn harvests in their warehouses, as GPMT’s warehouses cannot receive enough excess products. He added that he appreciated GPMT who pro-actively constructed ware houses and dryers for the commodity in many regions.

“I just know that they actually constructed warehouses and dryers at their own expenses. It seems that GPMT is ready to face the oversupply and decrease of corn imports. I really appreciate this.” Said the Minister.

The Government targeted to be able to be corn self-sufficient later or at least in 2018. This is one of the commodity which is not to be imported in the next 2 years. For that purpose, the Minister is going to further influence to many regions to boost corn production and shut down imports of the commodity.

“So, if there is an additional of corn production, imports can be suppressed. Our corn imports this year has been decreased by 3 million tons amounted in Rupiah 7 to 8 billion, this is just in one movement.” He pointed out.
